AMRC pays a visit to NWEH

The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) came to Greater Manchester today to discover how health informatics can be used to drive medical research.

Aisling Burnand MBE, Chief Executive, and Dr Liz Philpots, Head of Research, visited NorthWest EHealth (NWEH) to find out more about our technology and how it is changing healthcare, as part of an event organised by the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) promoting the area’s informatics expertise.

Burnand and Dr Philpots came to NWEH’s Salford Quays office to hear in more detail about the software behind the Salford Lung Study (SLS) and powerful profiling tool FARSITE.

The potential for medical charities to increase their participation in clinical research is substantial. Being able to run feasibility searches ahead of commissioning a study can give organisations confidence that trials are likely to be successful. This saves huge amounts of time and resource, whilst ensuring the research can quickly bring benefits to patients through healthcare improvements.

The AMRC left enthused - Burnand called it “amazing!” and said: “There are many stakeholders who could benefit from this work; it’s so important for the future – and exciting.”

Dr Philpots agreed that progress has been fantastic and highlighted the opportunities to expand the technology’s application in new areas.
